• Check to make sure the skylight is completely closed and sealed tightly. If the seal around the insulated glass unit has been eroded, it may simply need to be replaced. Keep in mind that any condensation will not disappear. The unit will likely need to be replaced if the glass is foggy and clouded.
• Look at the flashing around the skylight to determine if it has been damaged and needs repair. If so, you may be able to temporarily repair with roofing cement. However, a proper repair will likely necessitate removing shingles and old flashing, and then replacing them both.
• Especially after a storm, check the perimeter of the skylight for debris buildup which may be causing water to collect and intrude around the skylight.

Troubleshooting the Leak Source Beyond the Skylight

If the exterior of the skylight appears to be secure but water is still intruding, check areas up the roof slope. It is possible that missing shingles, roof damage or water intrusion higher up on the roof are the leak source. Once the water intrudes, it may run down the interior of your roof until it finds a way out and down – often through a skylight. In other words, the exterior of your skylight is watertight, but the leak is traveling from another point and escaping through an interior breach. Be sure to check all flashing and roof penetrations for problems.
