One of the most important aspects of the structural integrity of your home is above your head. Your roof not only protects your family and your possessions, but problems with your roof can cascade and cause all types of issues throughout your home.
The importance of a healthy roof is obvious, but it is often overlooked – out of sight, out of mind.
Even after you identify a problem, the fear of the scope of the problem may keep you from tackling the job immediately. But we have assembled some compelling instances when ignoring roof issues is definitely not a good idea.
Roof Issues To Deal With Immediately
- Roof Leaks: By the time a leak is evident inside the home, there has already been ongoing damage – likely for quite some time. There is no time to waste in calling a licensed roofing contractor to come find and fix the source of the roof leak. It is possible that the leak may be further damaging the structure of the roof, resulting in water intrusion in your drywall, eroding your insulation, causing mold and mildew in the attic and ventilation, and even compromising your electrical systems. Water runs anyplace it finds easy access, and unfortunately, no part of your home is immune. If you see a roof leak, call a roofing professional immediately.
- Holes in the Roof: Obviously, a hole in the roof is an issue – but an indentation or weak area is also cause for action. These indicate a vulnerability in the structure of the roof, and even if it is not leaking yet, that is likely inevitable if the issue is not resolved. Here in South Florida, holes in the roof may have been caused by flying debris or even simply strong winds which rip part of the roof off. If it is the dry season, you may not see leaks yet. Inspect your roof annually for obvious roof issues, but also be on the lookout for weak areas which could evolve into issues when saturated during the Sarasota rainy season.
- Cracking, Pulling, Curling: If it was installed correctly, your roof is constructed to give you several layers of protection. If a roof tile flies off, or an asphalt shingle is curling or cracking, your underlayment should protect you from water intrusion. Still, when one level of defense has been compromised, it is best to correct the roof issues and reinforce your roof again. If a single tile (or several in one area) have been damaged, quickly replace the tile or shingle to prevent future water intrusion.
- Trees & Critters: Although the trees growing in your yard don’t normally fall under the category of “roof issues”, we add them here as a precautionary measure. Trees falling on your roof is an obvious cause for alarm, but a tree branch which rests on your roof can also cause holes or damage over time. Not only that, but debris from the trees can clog your gutters and cause water to pool, overflow, or back up into the structure. Keeping tree branches away from your roof will help to keep your roof in top condition. On another note, tree branches which lie across your roof will also likely invite critters to jump over to your roof and take up residence, causing damage and burrowing holes.
Your roof will keep you and your family safe and dry for decades, if it is properly maintained. A bit of vigilance and attention should allow you to ensure a healthy roof for years to come. But if you notice any of the roof issues mentioned above, call Avery Roof Services right away. We will inspect your roof and make any repairs necessary to avoid a roof emergency.
