Between June and September, Sarasota sees more average rainfall than all the other months combined. With daily rain showers and frequent tropical strength storms, those of us who live here on the Gulf Coast are accustomed to the downpours.
That is why a Sarasota roof installation is not complete without gutters to channel the excess water away from the home. If you are looking to install new gutters on your roof, you may have realized that there are several options to choose from, including vinyl, copper and aluminum gutters. Which is right for you?
Vinyl, Copper or Aluminum Gutters? Let’s Compare.
Vinyl Gutters
Pros: Vinyl gutters are the most affordable and generally the easiest to install, as they are very lightweight and require only a few basic tools for assembly.
A popular option for do-it-yourself homeowners, this material is both dent and corrosion resistant.
Vinyl gutters are available in several colors, including white, brown and gray. They are easy to clean and do not require painting throughout their lifespan – although they may be painted if you choose.
Cons: Vinyl gutters may not be the best option due to our seasons of heavy rainfall. Their brackets are generally attached with short screws which often aren’t long enough to reach the rafters or trusses behind the fascia. Pay attention to the quality of the gutters you purchase, as cheaper products may be manufactured with thinner plastic which could sag under the weight of a lot of water or debris.
Copper Gutters
Pros: Copper gutters are naturally rust resistant, experience minimal expansion and contraction, and can last as long as 100 years under normal conditions. They are considerably more expensive than other options, but discerning homeowners often choose them for their distinctively unique appearance. Over time, the copper develops a greenish patina which adds a classic beauty to the exterior of the home.
Cons: Some may wish to maintain the shiny appearance of their gutter, and may not want the patina to form. If that is the case, treat copper gutters periodically with a sealant to prevent the copper from oxidizing. The cost of these gutters may be prohibitive for many homeowners.
Aluminum Gutters
Pros: Aluminum gutters are the most commonly utilized on homes across Florida. They are lightweight and durable, and widely available. Aluminum gutters are usually sold in white or brown, but they can be found elsewhere in other colors to match the aesthetic of your home. They can also be repainted. Gutters can be installed in several ways, including straphangers that attach to the roof sheathing, hidden brackets, exterior brackets, or with screws.
Cons: Aluminum gutters should not be used where the roof is covered with algae-resistant shingles. In coastal areas with frequent salt air, runoff from the shingles can remain in the gutters and lead to corrosion.
